1997 – Milan

Here’s that dress that a lot of people wanted to know the designer of.  I have no idea, but it’s such a departure from her usual style and she looks incredibly happy.  Getting away from the NYC paparazzi would make any celebrity thrilled.  (Although I have a feeling the European paps aren’t much better.)

This dress, the other colored t-shirt at the airport in Italy and the blue and white “cloud” t-shirt she wore when going out with John remind me of what John Perry Barlow said about her: “We didn’t talk about people, but of our views of life (at one of their first meetings). Carolyn had the air of a chic hippie. If she was allowed to be totally free, I think she would have worn faded and psychedelic clothes. She was a little odd, believed in astrology, very carefully studied the stars. She was also interested in the tarot.”

She seemed to have two fashion personalities. One was maybe her true self, and the other was for the fashion world. Remember that article in ’92 where she was interviewed by Glamour or W and she was wearing the “classic white shirt”? Maybe she liked color and patterns, but cultivated the chic, minimalist look because she worked at CK.

I would guess it’s Prada. Not only because she wore a lot Prada in private (I just read about a brown suit), but also because Prada has often turned to the 60s and 70s for design inspiration. Carolyn’s dress looks 70s to me.
And thinking of their younger and fresher Miu Miu line, which was one of Carolyn’s favorites according to RoseMarie, it might be that.
