July 22, 1997 – Gianni Versace’s funeral

Thanks to Jessika who provided some interesting articles below, I found out Carolyn was sort of a muse for Gianni Versace.  This is what Donatella had to say about her, and it’s very sweet:

“When John was starting George, he was coming to Milan a lot and stopped in Gianni’s office very often. But I first met Carolyn about four years ago, when she came to Milan with John and spent time with me and Gianni on Lake Como. She was very similar to my brother, both entertainers. Gianni would usually go to bed very early, but Carolyn kept him up. Of course, I was a little envious of her, too — who wouldn’t be? She said, “I’m never going to give up my friends, but at the same time, I will be the best wife for John.” She said John had a completely open mind about her fashion friends, who were different from his friends. He adored her personality, her outlook on life.

Any entrance Carolyn made, she made a statement. Apart from the clothes she wore, she had a way of moving her head and smiling, and her eyes were so expressive, she would always seem to be looking right at you. I thought that if anyone could take the place of his mother in the family, it could be her. After Gianni died, we went to a beautiful dinner at the home of Countess Crespi. You couldn’t smoke inside it, so Carolyn and I went upstairs and smoked in the balcony outside, and then we couldn’t get back in. The door had locked. John finally came by looking for her and he let us out.

Recently, I saw her in my shop on Fifth Avenue. I said, “Carolyn, what are you doing here?” I never saw her more happy. She was full of projects. I was making fun of her, saying, “What do you do all day, sit at home just waiting for the next party? That’s not you.” She said, “You just wait and see.”

The only two HQ photos are the first and second ones.

  1. Jessika says:

I found this on the website of the NY Daily News:
“The last interviews Gianni Versace gave before his murder are even more precious now. Versace, wearing a black cashmere polo shirt he was trying out for his own menswear collection next year, gave Business Week Rome bureau chief John Rossant a peek at his jet-setting schedule. “Recently, I spent two nights in Miami with Madonna. Then, I rushed to New York to be with Courtney Love. On the Wednesday I was back in London with Princess Diana. Then back to New York with Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. I call them my `poker women’ because there are four of them. They give me inspiration. Their needs are so different. You have to produce something spectacular for Madonna, something classic for Diana and something chic for Carolyn Bessette.”

    From CNN.com:
“Sometimes called the rock n roll designer, Gianni Versace counted Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Elton John and Eric Clapton among his clients. He also designed clothes for Princess Diana, Caroline of Monaco, and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.”

    From a Canadian site:
“Versace, who was shot to death in Miami Beach in 1997, said he was drawing inspiration of late from four fashion muses — Diana, Madonna, Courtney Love and Bessette Kennedy.
“They all have both chic and shock,” he wrote in an article for the New York Times magazine.
“American women are the most free,” the Italian designer wrote. “They use fashion and let fashion use them.”

There are 9 pages of various people describing how they met John or giving accounts of some event with him. One or the other also mentions Carolyn. This is Donatella’s account:

There is also a pic of Carolyn at the Fire & Ice Ball, where she talks to Gianni’s older brother Santo.

Also, does anyone know what she is holding in her hands in the second pic?

    • tmb1975 says:

They’re sunglasses. If you right click on the photo and open it in a new tab on your browser, you can zoom in because it’s a high resolution photo. 🙂

  3. Jessika says:

I had seen the pic in high resolution but couldn’t figure out what it is she is holding.
But now that you’re saying it, I see it too. 😀

  4. Julia says:

I´m sure that the woman on the 3rd Pic is not Carolyn.

    • tmb1975 says:

Corbis no longer has it on their site, but usually they are the one photo agency that gets their descriptions right. Alpha Press, Image Collect, Globe and some others always messed up her name, didn’t list her in the description or got the dates wrong.

I don’t think we’ll ever know unless some new photos appear. I searched for others, but nothing came up other than Elton and Diana.

      • Jessika says:

Julia is right. Carolyn was wearing a suit, not a skirt. Also Carolyn didn’t wear a veil. I think this is Donatella with their brother Sandro.

      • tmb1975 says:

I did more searching and found a video of it and it was Donatella. I’m surprised that Corbis got it wrong. I’m taking the photo down.
